New York state legislature approved medical cannabis use under the Compassionate Care Act in 2014. Under this legislation, medical marijuana may be utilized by patients suffering from certain medical conditions including cancer, chronic pain, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).New York requires that patients with qualifying conditions obtain a prescription from a registered physician who qualifies to prescribe medical marijuana in New York State. All eligible patients must be included in a registry. Dispensaries must verify patients before providing them with cannabis medicine. Under New York’s medical marijuana program, patients may consume cannabis in various forms: tinctures, oils, capsules, or vaping. Smoking is currently prohibited under law.
