What Is Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression?

A minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MILD) is an advanced treatment procedure for lumbar spinal stenosis. The spinal condition occurs when your lumbar spinal canal in your lower back narrows, compressing the sensitive spinal nerves, which causes severe pain. The low back pain, leg pain and leg numbness degrade the quality of your life by preventing you from participating in your favorite activities.

A spine surgeon carries out a MILD procedure using advanced medical technology to access and remove the bone or tissue that’s causing nerve compression in the lower region of your back. With x-ray guidance, the doctor finds the specific spot of nerve compression and then removes or repairs whatever’s causing your pain.

At her practice in New York City, board certified pain specialist Dr. Ilana Etelzon performs MILD procedures, along with a wide range of other advanced pain treatments. This specialist is certified in Physical Medicine and Rehab/Interventional Pain Management. She uses a non-operative approach to treat pain that includes minimally invasive procedures and regenerative medicine.

About the mild® Procedure

mild® is a short, outpatient treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) that restores space in the spinal canal to help improve back and leg pain.* Using specialized tools and imaging, mild® addresses a major root cause of LSS by removing thickened ligament through an incision smaller than the size of baby aspirin, leaving no implants behind, only a Band-Aid.

The minimally invasive mild® Procedure has a safety profile similar to epidural steroid injections but with lasting results, and patients typically return to normal activity within 24 hours with no restrictions.* mild® is covered nationwide by Medicare (all ages, all plan types, including Medicare Advantage) the VA, U.S. Military & IHS. Commercial coverage varies.

Am I a Candidate for MILD Procedure?

  • You suffer from lower back pain.
  • You feel severe pain when walking, a condition called neurogenic/spinal claudication.
  • Pain radiates down your legs.
  • Your pain intensifies with prolonged sitting or exercising.
  • You have pain and numbness in your low back, legs and buttocks.

How Is the MILD Procedure Done?

Dr. Etelzon may recommend the MILD pain treatment procedure after confirming a lumbar spinal stenosis diagnosis. This outpatient procedure takes less than an hour. The steps involved in the procedure include:

  1. Your doctor gives you a local anesthetic or light sedation.
  2. The NYC pain doctor makes a small incision, about five millimeters long, in the skin over your lumbar spine.
  3. Locating the right nerve. Using fluoroscopy guidance, the doctor locates the compressed nerve.
  4. Dr. Etelzon inserts a hollow portal to your spine and then inserts tools to remove the excess tissue or bone that’s compressing your tender nerves.
  5. Recovery. The MILD procedure involves minimal surgery and no blood loss. You don’t require stitches after the procedure and you may resume normal activities in 24 hours.

The MILD procedure is an advanced pain treatment procedure that targets the source of your pain. Dr. Etelzon in NYC has the expertise and technology required to administer this and other complex spinal procedures.
